“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
Jeremiah 29:11 NIV
The ministry Living Hope Nicaragua, through its English Program Nica-ELL (English Language Learning), is committed to seeking educational opportunities that will enable young people to have a better future. We are providing what we consider to be an excellent tool—learning the English language. A tangible testimony to how the English program has changed lives is evidenced in our team members. Through our program, team members have reached a level of proficiency in English that equips them to teach students in our Levels 1, 2, 3, and 4. It is our desire that, through learning English, many other young people will have opportunities opened to them.
Through the program, a sponsor can enable a young person to be benefited by the Nica-ELL English Program. The student sponsored will study through the five levels to reach a proficient level of English language use. Each trimester is 14 weeks. A student who graduates from the program should have proficiency in speaking, understanding, reading, and writing in English. At the end of the course, this student should have a sufficient proficiency to obtain a job that requires English as a second language.
The sponsorship program is envisioned as a way to support the English Program. We have created Sponsorship for a Better Future with the purpose of helping these young people in their quest for a better life. We would like to encourage people who have a love for helping others to be a part of this program.
Description of Sponsorship for a Better Future
You can sponsor an English student by donating $30 per month to the ministry Living Hope Nicaragua. The English course extends over five levels of instruction. Each trimester is 14 weeks; there are three trimesters in each year. You can even sponsor more than one student if you desire.
The monthly investment provides for: English materials for each of the five levels; 6 hours of class per week; additional English materials for reinforcing the classes such as videos, audios, handouts. This investment would also provide an English teacher for the whole course and the fare for the trimester field trip. And, finally, the sponsorship would provide for assistance by the teacher in the preparation of English letters to exchange with sponsors. The exchange of letters would occur approximately once every three months or at the end of each level.
As a Christian ministry, we believe that teaching English can positively change the future of our students. Additionally, we believe that providing students with the Word of God can change their eternal lives. For this reason, we begin classes with prayer and the sharing of Scripture. Students are sometimes asked to lead the prayer either in English or in Spanish. And they are also invited to make comments in English about the Scripture of the day.
English students in Level 5 receive class with a North American teacher, Patricia Striplin from Tallahassee, Florida. We meet two days per week with the Level 5 students, 3 hours each day. This class is conducted through Zoom; and, periodically, Patricia is able to come to Nicaragua to teach the class in Leon.
We really believe that you can make a huge difference in the life of a Nicaraguan young person through the sponsorship program. You would not only be instrumental in changing someone’s life, but your own life might be changed as well.
The King will reply, “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”
Matthew 25:40 NIV
The students who participate in our English program have no economic resources to pay for a private English academy, but each one has a desire to learn this language. Many of our students are still in high school and others are working on a degree in the public university, which is tuition free. Others have a university degree but are unemployed because of the economic situation of the country. They are seeking other opportunities. Most of our students come from very poor neighborhoods or from small towns outside the city of León and have to use public transportation to get to the classes. We see in our students an intense desire to better themselves, and we feel an intense desire to provide a pathway, an opportunity to enrich their lives.
You can be part of this amazing work in the Nica-ELL Program and Sponsorship for a Better Future.
Our organization is a non-profit organization. All our programs are funded by donations made by people with a giving heart. Your donations should be tax deductible.
